Ensayista, novelista y poeta escocés. A pesar de que estudió leyes, jamás ejerció como abogado. Realizó muchos viajes, en parte para buscar mejores aires para mitigar su tuberculosis, enfermedad que acabaría con su vida a los 44 años de edad. Se hizo conocido por sus crónicas de viajes como
Viaje en asno por las Cevenas (1879), y por los ensayos que publicó en revistas y que recogió en el volumen
Virginibus Puerisque (1881). Sus popularísimas novelas, entre ellas,
La isla del tesoro (1883),
Secuestrado (
1886),
El extraño caso del doctor Jekyll y Mr. Hyde (
1886) y
El señor de Ballantrae (1889), fueron escritas en un período de pocos años.
Jardín poético del niño (1885) es una de las obras más influyentes de literatura para niños del s. XIX. Vivió sus últimos años en Samoa, donde escribió trabajos que apuntan a una nueva madurez. Algunos de los más notables son el cuento "La playa de Falesá (1892) y la novela
El dique de Hermiston (1896), obra maestra que no alcanzó a terminar.
